Keeper of Lore

Finder Cloudburst Chapter 6, Part 6

The door itself was a
fine bit of art, carved with
intricate lines and
words I knew not.

Tick pushed the door open
revealing a blackness
unlit by the hole
above our heads.

I lit a lantern, held
it aloft and cast back
the murky shadows.
The room was bare.

“There is nothing here,” Tick
said. “Wait, lift your lantern.
There is another
door over there.”

I stepped through the door that
has haunted my thoughts and
dreams over the last
several weeks.

My dreams crumbled as they
were humbled by this room.
The walls had caved in
on either side.

I decided to map
this place as we explore.
I do not want to
lose our way out.

This house was once quite grand.
But collapsed walls spewing
dirt inside have made
it much smaller.

We found a hallway with
several ancient statues
and stairs leading up,
though they were blocked.

The only other room
was a large library.
I marveled at all
of the old books.

I could not decide which
books to bring home to Wren.
I grabbed just a few
and some sculptures.

Tick filled his bag with things
ancient and worthy
of Wren’s interest
and her money.

I said, “We cannot haul
any more loot than this.
Let’s take it home and
come back for more.”

Tick and I trundled home,
packs filled with the promise
of more adventures
and a good life.
