The Spinner’s Writ: The People Are Born, Part 2
The beings murmured to each other.
Though I could not hear them,
the presence of their words
in the air burdened us like
great weights set upon our shoulders.
We stood within a forest clearing
as the blinding specters
put their attention on us.
They took in the sights around them
and bestowed upon each person
the name of a thing that they saw.
Moth, Pine, Fox, Bear and Fawn
Trunk, Cloud, Worm and Leaf
Lastly, they named me Trillium,
as I was the first to wake
so should my name be set
above the others,
declared these gods.
For indeed gods they were,
but not the queen and king,
merely their Children.
Nonetheless, their presence
was overwhelming to us
and we began to grow faint.
One Child stepped forward
and declared himself to be
the Lord of Feasts.
His smile was wide
but devoid of joy.
His hands were stained with blood
or perhaps wine.
Small creatures dangled from his belt
bound by their tails,
wriggling and screeching in terror.
He walked past me
and his shadow brushed my foot.
The skin blistered and peeled.
I yelled with pain.
The Lord of Feasts laughed loudly and
a splendidly laid table
appeared before us.
We ate and drank until satisfied.
Our strength had returned.
The Lord of Feasts departed.
