The Unfated Wanderers Canto 19
Within Twigstar once more, the Unfated Wanderers gave the stolen Stormcraft book to Unbe Magister. The day passed while they rested and Unbe studied.
In the morning, Unbe summoned them to his study. He said, “I have learned what I needed to know about the horrid magic that the Stormcraft cult is using to slay giants. It will not help us to fight Darkling Fomenters. The book did contain notes about other research projects.”
“The cult had considered allowing Darklings to enter the Living World so that they could enslave them. They were researching the creation of objects that would control the Darklings. The wizards wanted to use them to slay the giants.”
“Cultists entered the Realm of Terrors through a portal in Fleagrass. It must be the same portal that you told me about the other day. They located a Darkling Fomenter and attacked it with the weapons that they created. Terror Spikes are long, black, metal spears. These spikes were designed to pierce the flesh of the Darkling and control its mind. The design was faulty though. Successfully wounding a Darkling with a Terror Spike only caused it to shrink to human size. It still retained its invisibility and innate aura of fear. The spike also failed to put it under their control. This was not the result they were looking for, so they abandoned further development of this weapon.”
"We can use this. As you know, I am an expert artificer of materia magica. I have already created rings that negate the fear aura and allow the wearer to see that which is invisible. I believe that I can manufacture Terror Spikes. Armed with ring and spear, humanity has a chance of surviving the oncoming Apocalypse.”
